ABSTRACT

Workplace violence (WPV) is a prevalent phenomenon, especially in the healthcare setting. WPV against healthcare workers (HCWs) has increased during the COVID-19 epidemic. This meta-analysis determined the prevalence and risk factors of WPV. A database search was conducted across six databases in May 2022, which was updated in October 2022. WPV prevalence among HCWs was the main outcome. Data were stratified by WPV/HCW type, pandemic period (early, mid, late), and medical specialty. WPV risk factors were the secondary outcome. All analyses were conducted through STATA. Newcastle Ottawa Scale evaluated the quality. Sensitivity analysis identified effect estimate changes. A total of 38 studies (63,672 HCWs) were analyzed. The prevalence of WPV of any kind (43%), physical (9%), verbal (48%), and emotional (26%) was high. From mid-pandemic to late-pandemic, WPV (40-47%), physical violence (12-23%), and verbal violence (45-58%) increased. Nurses had more than double the rate of physical violence (13% vs. 5%) than physicians, while WPV and verbal violence were equal. Gender, profession, and COVID-19 timing did not affect WPV, physical, or verbal violence risk. COVID-19 HCWs were more likely to be physically assaulted (logOR = 0.54; 95% CI: 0.10: 0.97). Most healthcare employees suffer verbal violence, followed by emotional, bullying, sexual harassment, and physical assault. Pandemic-related workplace violence increased. Nurses were twice as violent as doctors. COVID-19 healthcare employees had a higher risk of physical and workplace violence.

ABSTRACT

Based on a questionnaire survey (N = 857), this study analyzed generational differences in the public health behaviors of COVID-19 and provided an explanation for generational differences from the perspective of media exposure. There are significant differences in media exposure and health behaviors between the Mesozoic generation (35–55) and the young generation (18–34) during the lull. The Mesozoic generation paid greater attention to information on pandemics. Consequently, their health behaviors surpass that of the young generation. On the basis of social cognitive theory and protection motivation theory, this study develops a mediating model of media exposure on health behaviors, demonstrating that media exposure can influence health behaviors through the mediating effects of perceived severity, self-efficacy, and response efficacy, but not via perceived susceptibility. Moreover, a moderated mediation study found that generation moderates the indirect effect of media exposure on health behaviors via perceived susceptibility. Media exposure influences Mesozoic healthy behaviors positively by decreasing their perceived susceptibility. The implication of this study is that the development of health communication theory must account for generational differences and disease-specific characteristics.

ABSTRACT

This research aims to explore the multi-focus group method as an effective tool for systematically eliciting business requirements for business information system (BIS) projects. During the COVID-19 crisis, many businesses plan to transform their businesses into digital businesses. Business managers face a critical challenge: they do not know much about detailed system requirements and what they want for digital transformation requirements. Among many approaches used for understanding business requirements, the focus group method has been used to help elicit BIS needs over the past 30 years. However, most focus group studies about research practices mainly focus on a particular disciplinary field, such as social, biomedical, and health research. Limited research reported using the multi-focus group method to elicit business system requirements. There is a need to fill this research gap. A case study is conducted to verify that the multi-focus group method might effectively explore detailed system requirements to cover the Case Study business's needs from transforming the existing systems into a visual warning system. The research outcomes verify that the multi-focus group method might effectively explore the detailed system requirements to cover the business's needs. This research identifies that the multi-focus group method is especially suitable for investigating less well-studied, no previous evidence, or unstudied research topics. As a result, an innovative visual warning system was successfully deployed based on the multi-focus studies for user acceptance testing in the Case Study mine in Feb 2022. The main contribution is that this research verifies the multi-focus group method might be an effective tool for systematically eliciting business requirements. Another contribution is to develop a flowchart for adding to Systems Analysis & Design course in information system education, which may guide BIS students step by step on using the multi-focus group method to explore business system requirements in practice.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Compared with children and immunocompromised patients, Adenovirus pneumonia in immunocompetent adults is less common. Evaluation of the applicability of severity score in predicting intensive care unit (ICU) admission of Adenovirus pneumonia is limited. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 50 Adenovirus pneumonia inpatients in Xiangtan Central Hospital from 2018 to 2020. Hospitalized patients with no pneumonia or immunosuppression were excluded. Clinical characteristics and chest image at the admission of all patients were collected. Severity scores, including Pneumonia severity index (PSI), CURB-65, SMART-COP, and PaO2/FiO2 combined lymphocyte were evaluated to compare the performance of ICU admission. RESULTS: Fifty inpatients with Adenovirus pneumonia were selected, 27 (54%) non-ICU and 23 (46%) ICU. Most patients were men (40 [80.00%]). Age median was 46.0 (IQR 31.0-56.0). Patients who required ICU care (n = 23) were more likely to report dyspnea (13[56.52%] vs 6[22.22%]; P = 0.002) and have lower transcutaneous oxygen saturation ([90% (IQR, 90-96), 95% (IQR, 93-96)]; P = 0.032). 76% (38/50) of patients had bilateral parenchymal abnormalities, including 91.30% (21/23) of ICU patients and 62.96% (17/27) of non-ICU patients. 23 Adenovirus pneumonia patients had bacterial infections, 17 had other viruses, and 5 had fungi. Coinfection with virus was more common in non-ICU patients than ICU patients (13[48.15%]VS 4[17.39%], P = 0.024), while bacteria and fungi not. SMART-COP exhibited the best ICU admission evaluation performance in Adenovirus pneumonia patients (AUC = 0.873, p < 0.001) and distributed similar in coinfections and no coinfections (p = 0.26). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, Adenovirus pneumonia is not uncommon in immunocompetent adult patients who are susceptible to coinfection with other etiological illnesses. The initial SMART-COP score is still a reliable and valuable predictor of ICU admission in non-immunocompromised adult inpatients with adenovirus pneumonia.

ABSTRACT

Wuhan took strict measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 from January 26 to April 7 in 2020. The lockdown reduced the concentrations of atmospheric pollutants, except ozone (O3). To investigate the increase in O3 during the lockdown, trace gas pollutants were collected. The initial concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were calculated based on a photochemical ratio method, and the ozone formation potential (OFP) was obtained using the initial and measured VOC concentrations. The O3 formation regime was NOX-limited based on the VOCs/NOX diurnal ratios during the lockdown period. The reduced nitric oxide (NO) concentrations and lower wind speed (WS) could explain the night-time O3 accumulation. The initial total VOCs (TVOCs) during the lockdown were 47.6 ± 2.9 ppbv, and alkenes contributed 48.1%. The photochemical loss amounts of alkenes were an order of magnitude higher than those of alkenes in the same period in 2019 and increased from 16.6 to 28.0 ppbv in the daytime. The higher initial alkene concentrations sustained higher OFP during the lockdown, reaching between 252.4 and 504.4 ppbv. The initial isoprene contributed approximately 35.0-55.0% to the total OFP and had a positive correlation with the increasing O3 concentrations. Approximately 75.5% of the temperatures were concentrated in the range of 5 and 20 °C, which were higher than those in 2019. In addition to stronger solar radiation, the higher temperatures induced higher isoprene emission rates, partially accounting for the higher isoprene concentrations. Lower isoprene-emitting trees should be considered for future urban vegetation to control O3 episodes.

ABSTRACT

There has been an important change in the clinical characteristics and immune profile of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients during the pandemic thanks to the extensive vaccination programs. Here, we highlight recent studies on COVID-19, from the clinical and immunological characteristics to the protective and risk factors for severity and mortality of COVID-19. The efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines and potential allergic reactions after administration are also discussed. The occurrence of new variants of concerns such as Omicron BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5 and the global administration of COVID-19 vaccines have changed the clinical scenario of COVID-19. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may cause severe and heterogeneous disease but with a lower mortality rate. Perturbations in immunity of T cells, B cells, and mast cells, as well as autoantibodies and metabolic reprogramming may contribute to the long-term symptoms of COVID-19. There is conflicting evidence about whether atopic diseases, such as allergic asthma and rhinitis, are associated with a lower susceptibility and better outcomes of COVID-19. At the beginning of pandemic, the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) developed guidelines that provided timely information for the management of allergic diseases and preventive measures to reduce transmission in the allergic clinics. The global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and emerging severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants with reduced pathogenic potential dramatically decreased the morbidity, severity, and mortality of COVID-19. Nevertheless, breakthrough infection remains a challenge for disease control. Hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) to COVID-19 vaccines are low compared to other vaccines, and these were addressed in EAACI statements that provided indications for the management of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis to COVID-19 vaccines. We have gained a depth knowledge and experience in the over 2 years since the start of the pandemic, and yet a full eradication of SARS-CoV-2 is not on the horizon. Novel strategies are warranted to prevent severe disease in high-risk groups, the development of MIS-C and long COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: During the lockdown of cities and home quarantine, media became the only way for people to conveniently get coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19)-related information. And media engagement was closely related to psychological outcomes. But fewer researchers took COVID-19-related posting behaviors into consideration. Therefore, the present study aimed at examining the differences in psychological outcomes between people who posted COVID-19-related content on social media and those who did not. METHODS: The present study included 917 participants (304 males, 613 females) who had answered the questionnaires of media engagement, positive affect, negative affect, depression, anxiety, stress, satisfaction with life, death anxiety, and meaning in life. RESULTS: Results of t-tests showed that the Post group had lower levels of negative affect, anxiety, stress, and death anxiety than the Not Post (Npost) group. Network comparison tests indicated that the Npost group's network and the Post group's network differed in global strength, two edge-weights, and node centrality indices. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that more attention should be paid to people who did not post any COVID-19-related content, especially when they have higher levels of stress and depression to prevent comorbidities. And for people who posted content, more attention should be paid when they have a higher level of negative affect.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, owing to the miniaturization of the fluidic environment, microfluidic technology offers unique opportunities for the implementation of nano drug delivery systems (NDDSs) production processes. Compared with traditional methods, microfluidics improves the controllability and uniformity of NDDSs. The fast mixing and laminar flow properties achieved in the microchannels can tune the physicochemical properties of NDDSs, including particle size, distribution and morphology, resulting in narrow particle size distribution and high drug-loading capacity. The success of lipid nanoparticles encapsulated mRNA vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 by microfluidics also confirmed its feasibility for scaling up the preparation of NDDSs via parallelization or numbering-up. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of microfluidics-based NDDSs, including the fundamentals of microfluidics, microfluidic synthesis of NDDSs, and their industrialization. The challenges of microfluidics-based NDDSs in the current status and the prospects for future development are also discussed. We believe that this review will provide good guidance for microfluidics-based NDDSs.

ABSTRACT

Due to the rapidly increasing ridership and the relatively enclosed underground space, the indoor air quality (IAQ) in underground subway stations (USSs) has attracted more public attention. The air pollutants in USSs, such as particulate matter (PM), CO2 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are hazardous to the health of passengers and staves. Firstly, this paper presents a systematic review on the characteristics and sources of air pollutants in USSs. According to the review work, the concentrations of PM, CO2, VOCs, bacteria and fungi in USSs are 1.1-13.2 times higher than the permissible concentration limits specified by WHO, ASHRAE and US EPA. The PM and VOCs are mainly derived from the internal and outdoor sources. CO2 concentrations are highly correlated with the passenger density and the ventilation rate while the exposure levels of bacteria and fungi depend on the thermal conditions and the settled dust. Then, the online monitoring, fault detection and prediction methods of IAQ are summarized and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are also discussed. In addition, the available control strategies for improving IAQ in USSs are reviewed, and these strategies are classified and compared from different viewpoints. Lastly, challenges of the IAQ management in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic and several suggestions for underground stations' IAQ management in the future are put forward. This paper is expected to provide a comprehensive guidance for further research and design of the effective prevention measures on air pollutants in USSs so as to achieve more sustainable and healthy underground environment.

ABSTRACT

Background: Mixed messaging among health officials are prevalent amid COVID-19. Crisis communication strategies have the potential to help health officials effectively address issues such as mixed messages and improve their crisis communication efficacy. However, there is a dearth of insights in the literature. Therefore, to bridge the research gap, this study aims to examine practical strategies health officials can utilize to improve their crisis communication efficacy. Methods: A literature review on effective crisis communication strategies amid COVID-19 was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO, with a focus on scholarly literature published in English. Results: The findings of the study identified the following strategies that health officials can utilize to improve their crisis communication capabilities: (1) develop fact-based, transparent, and accountable messaging, (2) utilize people-centered and empathetic persuasive strategies, and (3) leverage international collaboration for consistent messaging and comprehensive crisis communication. Conclusion: COVID-19 has challenged health officials with unprecedented crisis communication duties and responsibilities. In this study, we underscored the importance of effective crisis communication amid global health emergencies like COVID-19, and identified communication strategies health officials could adopt or adapt to improve their crisis communication efficacy. Future research could explore strategies health officials can use to better communicate with government officials and media professionals to further help health officials improve their crisis communication capabilities, their abilities to avoid preventable miscommunication or mixed messaging, and in turn, society's collective strengthen in curbing and controlling the pandemic.

Currently, the majority of the global population has been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine, and characterization studies of antibodies in vivo from Omicron breakthrough infection and naive infection populations are urgently needed to provide pivotal clues about accurate diagnosis, treatment, and next-generation vaccine design against SARS-CoV-2 infection. We showed that after infection with Omicron-BA.2, the antibody levels of specific IgM against the Wuhan strain and specific IgG against Omicron were not significantly elevated within 27 days of onset. Interestingly, in this study, the levels of humoral immunity against Omicron-specific IgM were significantly increased after breakthrough infection, suggesting that the detection of Omicron-specific IgM antibodies can be used as a test criterion of Omicron breakthrough infection. In addition, we observed that serums from unvaccinated individuals and the majority of vaccinated infections possessed only low or no neutralizing activity against Omicron at the onset of Omicron breakthrough infections, and at the later stage of Omicron-BA.2 breakthrough infection, levels of neutralization antibody against the Wuhan and Omicron strains were elevated in infected individuals. The findings of this study provide important clues for the diagnosis of Omicron breakthrough infections, antibody characterization studies and vaccine design against COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the infectiousness of re-positive coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. METHODS: All nucleic acid testing (NAT) was performed using throat swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, and anal swabs, which were tested by Fluorescent quantitative realtime PCR. Re-positive cases were defined as a discharged patient who re-tested positive by NAT. Micro-neutralization of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was performed based on the methods for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) viruses. IgM and IgG against the N protein of SARS-CoV-2 were determined by ELISA. RESULTS: A total 255 (16.04%) of 1590 COVID-19 patients were re-positive. The re-positive cases were more likely to occur in patients in the 20-39 years age group and in patients with disease of moderate severity. Quantitative PCR showed that cycle threshold (Ct) values and viral loads were both far lower than in the hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The viral load in re-positive cases was very low. Viral culture of the samples from re-positive patients showed no cytopathic effect, and NAT of the culture medium of viral cultures all exhibited negative results. CONCLUSION: The viral load in re-positive cases was very low; patients were not infectious and the risk of human-to-human transmission was extremely low. Discharged COVID-19 patients should undergo home health management for 3 weeks.

ABSTRACT

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which has lasted for more than two years and significantly affected tourism, people's yearning for better tourism has never weakened, and China's Dual Carbon Strategy further enhanced their desire. At the end of 2020, Ding Zhen shot to stardom on the Internet because of his rugged good looks, further improving the reputation of Ganzi, Sichuan Province, and demonstrating tourists' desire to appreciate authentic destinations. The following are worthy of research: the factors affecting tourists' perceptions of the authenticity of destinations, the relationship between perceptions of authenticity and place attachment in potential tourists, and methods to strengthen the authenticity of a destination to enhance the place attachment of potential tourists. Taking Ganzi and Ding Zhen as the research subjects, this paper uses a co-occurrence network map analyzing the four kinds of authenticity perceived for tourist destinations, based on user-generated content, and uses the term frequency-inverse document frequency method to further calculate the weight score of factors. Finally, the paper verifies the influence of each dimension on place attachment by calculating comment sentiment scores. The results show that (1) natural landscapes, human characteristics, and preferential measures significantly impacted the perception of authenticity among potential tourists;(2) among the four kinds of authenticity perceptions, humanistic authenticity was the major promoting factor by which potential tourists formed place attachment. Based on the research results, the paper puts forward a series of suggestions to improve tourists' emotional attachment to destinations, including creating cultural symbols of local differences, adopting preferential policies for local tickets in a timely manner, and emphasizing nature protection.

Various variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been emerging and circulating in different parts of the world. Millions of vaccine doses have been administered globally, which reduces the morbidity and mortality of coronavirus disease-2019 efficiently. Here, we assess the immune responses of individuals after two shots of BBIBP-CorV or CoronaVac inactivated vaccine. We measured neutralizing antibody responses after the second vaccination by using authentic SARS-CoV-2 and its viral variants. All the serum samples efficiently neutralized SARS-CoV-2 wild-type lineage, in contrast, a part of serum samples failed to neutralize Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, or Eta lineages, and only several serum samples were able to neutralize Omicron lineage virus strains (BA.1 and BA.2) with low neutralization titer. As compared with the neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 wild-type lineage, the neutralization of all other SARS-CoV-2 variant lineages was significantly lower. Considering that all the SARS-CoV-2 mutation viruses challenged the antibody neutralization induced by BBIBP-CorV and CoronaVac, it is necessary to carry out a third booster vaccination to increase the humoral immune response against the SARS-CoV-2 mutation viruses.

ABSTRACT

In January 2020, Guangdong Province, China imported several suspected cases with SARS-CoV-2 from Wuhan City, Hubei Province. China, which were detected as SARS-CoV-2 positive in laboratory. To further understand the SARS-CoV-2 virulence, as well as drug development and epidemic prevention and control needs, we established a SARS-CoV-2 isolation procedure. Vero-E6 cells were infected with the positive bronchoalveolar-lavage sample. The cells were monitored daily for cytopathic effects using light microscopy. The presence of viral nucleic acid in the supernatant was detected by RT-PCR. RNA extracted from culture supernatants were used as a template to clone and sequence the genome. We used Illumina sequencing to characterize the virus genome and results showed that the isolated virus was SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT

China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. However, the atmospheric observation of greenhouse gases is relatively sparse. In this study, surface measurements of CH4 over 5 years at a typical city site (Hangzhou) in an economically developed region in China were conducted to study the temporal variations and the influence of meteorological factors and airmass transport. The CH4 observations from a suburban site (Lin'an station [LAN]) which is a World Meteorological Organization/Global Atmosphere Monitoring Program (WMO/GAW) regional site, were also compared. Our results showed that the atmospheric CH4 mole fraction in Hangzhou was not only affected by meteorological factors and topography, but also by strong local emissions. Although the distance between the two stations was only 50 km, there was a significant difference in the temporal CH4 variations. The strong anthropogenic emissions in the city were responsible for the urban-suburban site difference. The CH4 peaks in the diurnal cycles in Hangzhou corresponded to rush hours, and there were unique variations during special periods (i.e., the National Day holiday, coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID - 19] lock-down). It also led to an annual average CH4 mole fraction at the Hangzhou station (HZ) that was on average 111.1 ± 1.6 ppb higher than that at the LAN from 2016 to 2020. The lock-down measures caused by the outbreak of COVID - 19 decreased the atmospheric CH4 mole fractions by 6.8% in Hangzhou but only 1.9% in Lin'an in 2020 compared to those in 2019. Excluding the data in 2020, the annual growth rate of the CH4 mole fraction was 19.0 ppb yr−1 in Hangzhou. Our results indicated that the CH4 mole fraction in Hangzhou was mainly driven by local anthropogenic emissions, although they were influenced by emissions from surrounding cities such as Nanjing and Ningbo.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease2019 (COVID-19)has become a global pandemic. Many recognition approaches based on convolutional neural networks have been proposed for COVID-19 chest X-ray images. However, only a few of them make good use of the potential inter- and intra-relationships of feature maps. Considering the limitation mentioned above, this paper proposes an attention-based convolutional neural network, called PCXRNet, for diagnosis of pneumonia using chest X-ray images. To utilize the information from the channels of the feature maps, we added a novel condense attention module (CDSE) that comprised of two steps: condensation step and squeeze-excitation step. Unlike traditional channel attention modules, CDSE first downsamples the feature map channel by channel to condense the information, followed by the squeeze-excitation step, in which the channel weights are calculated. To make the model pay more attention to informative spatial parts in every feature map, we proposed a multi-convolution spatial attention module (MCSA). It reduces the number of parameters and introduces more nonlinearity. The CDSE and MCSA complement each other in series to tackle the problem of redundancy in feature maps and provide useful information from and between feature maps. We used the ChestXRay2017 dataset to explore the internal structure of PCXRNet, and the proposed network was applied to COVID-19 diagnosis. As a result, the network achieves an accuracy of 94.619%, recall of 94.753%, precision of 95.286%, and F1-score of 94.996% on the COVID-19 dataset.
